Heat-sensitive plant ingredients (e.g., enzymes, vitamins, volatile oils) are easily degraded by traditional thermal concentration, but low temperature membrane concentration for plant extraction preserves their bioactivity while reducing production costs.
Reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration membranes concentrate plant extracts at ambient temperatures, using pressure-driven separation instead of heat. This method retains over 95% of volatile and thermolabile compounds, making it ideal for extracts like mint essential oil, turmeric curcumin, and sea buckthorn vitamin C.
A natural supplement producer adopted a low-temperature RO membrane system for sea buckthorn extract, concentrating vitamin C levels from 5% to 20% without any measurable degradation. The process also reduced energy consumption by 60% compared to vacuum evaporation, improving the product’s profit margin and environmental footprint.
