Chinese herbal extracts are obtained through water extraction or ethanol leaching, containing a variety of valuable active ingredients such as flavonoids, glycosides, polyphenols and alkaloids. However, the crude extract also carries a large amount of unstable impurities, including plant colloids, crude fiber powder, denatured protein, tannins and inorganic salt ions. If these impurities remain in the liquid, they will cause turbidity, precipitation, dark color and poor stability of finished herbal preparations, seriously affecting product safety, appearance quality and shelf life.

Traditional herbal refining processes have prominent technical bottlenecks. Alcohol precipitation requires a large amount of ethanol, resulting in high production cost and solvent residue risks, and easily causes loss of partial active substances. Resin adsorption has a low single-pass treatment capacity, requires frequent regeneration, and generates a large amount of waste liquid. Thermal vacuum concentration destroys heat-sensitive active ingredients, reduces medicinal activity and causes serious product browning, which cannot meet the requirements of high-end standardized Chinese medicine production.

Nanofiltration membrane separation technology provides an ideal upgrading solution for herbal extract refining. With graded pore structure and charge rejection effect, the NF membrane can accurately intercept macromolecular colloids, protein and tannin impurities, while allowing small-molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients to pass through stably. Different from dead-end filtration, the cross-flow circulating operation continuously scours the membrane surface, effectively relieving membrane fouling caused by herbal colloids and ensuring long-term stable filtration flux.

The whole refining and concentration process is carried out at room temperature without high-temperature heating or chemical additives, completely protecting the biological activity of herbal active ingredients. While achieving high-precision purification, nanofiltration realizes synchronous low-temperature concentration, removes excess water from the extract, greatly reduces the load of subsequent drying and crystallization processes, and significantly lowers overall energy consumption.

This technology is widely applicable to ginseng, astragalus, honeysuckle, chrysanthemum and various botanical extract purification and refining projects. The fully automatic membrane system supports 24-hour continuous production, reduces manual operation and avoids waste generated by traditional filter materials. Manufacturers can adjust operating pressure, flow rate and membrane molecular weight cutoff according to different herbal characteristics and product purity requirements to achieve customized decolorization, desalination and impurity removal.

After nanofiltration refining, the herbal extract features clear appearance, stable properties, low salt content and high active ingredient purity, effectively solving the problems of finished product precipitation, turbidity and unstable efficacy. Modular skid-mounted nanofiltration equipment covers a small area and is easy to integrate into existing production lines, helping TCM processing enterprises achieve clean, low-carbon and intelligent upgrading of traditional refining processes.

Membrane separation technology is a kind of technology that uses a selectively permeable membrane as the separation medium. By applying a certain driving force (such as pressure difference, concentration difference, etc.) on both sides of the membrane, the components on the feed side can selectively permeate through the membrane, so as to achieve the purposes of separation, purification, concentration and so on.
Nowadays, more and more enterprises have keenly perceived the remarkable advantages brought by membrane technology and are actively adopting this technology to boost their own development.

In the food and beverage industry, enterprises utilize membrane technology for operations such as juice concentration and protein purification. This not only effectively preserves the flavor and nutritional components of products but also enhances product quality and extends the shelf life.

In the chemical industry, membrane technology can be applied to the recovery and separation of solvents. It improves the utilization rate of raw materials, reduces production costs, and at the same time, decreases pollutant emissions, enabling green production.

In the water treatment industry, membrane technology plays an irreplaceable role. From the in-depth treatment of industrial wastewater to the purification of drinking water, by removing impurities, heavy metal ions, and microorganisms in water, it provides enterprises with high-quality production water and effluent that meets the standards.

In the biopharmaceutical industry, membrane separation technology can accurately separate and purify biological products, ensuring the activity and purity of products and facilitating the smooth progress of new drug research and development as well as production.

It can be said that membrane technology is gradually becoming an important means for enterprises to enhance their competitiveness and achieve sustainable development.
