Gardenia yellow pigment, extracted from gardenia jasminoides fruit, is a widely used natural food colorant preferred by food, beverage and health product manufacturers. Traditional refining methods such as resin adsorption and thermal evaporation face obvious drawbacks: high energy consumption, heavy pigment loss under high temperature, large solvent consumption, unstable color value and high operating costs. Membrane separation technology has become an ideal upgrade solution for gardenia yellow production, delivering clarification, impurity removal and concentration under low-temperature conditions.
The integrated membrane workflow for gardenia yellow adopts a multi-stage combination of microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF). First, ceramic microfiltration removes large particles, fibers, pectin and macromolecular proteins from crude gardenia extract to achieve liquid clarification, reducing turbidity and preventing sediment in final pigment products. Next, ultrafiltration performs deep purification, separating crocin (the effective pigment component) from geniposide and other unwanted impurities. This step lowers the OD value effectively and improves the purity and stability of gardenia yellow. After purification, nanofiltration concentrates the pigment liquid at ambient temperature. Unlike thermal evaporators, the membrane process avoids thermal degradation of crocin, retaining high color value of gardenia yellow.
The biggest advantage of membrane technology lies in its mild operating environment. The whole process runs at room temperature without adding organic solvents, meeting food-grade production standards. Cross-flow membrane systems maintain stable flux with easy CIP cleaning, supporting continuous industrial production. Compared with conventional processes, membrane equipment cuts energy consumption greatly, reduces wastewater discharge, and extends the service life of follow-up resin columns. The pigment recovery rate increases obviously, and finished gardenia yellow features brighter color, less precipitation and longer shelf life.
Our sanitary tubular membrane system is specially customized for natural plant pigment processing. The fully stainless steel structure meets food hygiene requirements. Automatic PLC control simplifies operation and reduces manual errors. The system can be tailored for different production capacities, suitable for small pilot lines as well as large-scale gardenia yellow factories.
For natural pigment manufacturers aiming for higher yield, better product quality and lower operational expense, membrane separation is a reliable technical upgrade. It helps producers obtain high-value gardenia yellow pigment while realizing cleaner and greener production.
