Introduction

1,4‑Butanediol (BDO) is an important raw material for biodegradable polymers, fine chemicals and pharmaceutical intermediates. BDO produced by fermentation contains proteins, colloids, pigments and other impurities, presenting a dark raw broth. Traditional distillation and activated‑carbon decolorization consume large amounts of steam and generate plenty of waste.

As shown in test samples, dark raw BDO feedstock turns into bright golden‑yellow clear liquid after graded membrane treatment. Membrane separation performs clarification, decolorization and pre‑concentration under mild temperature without phase change, becoming an optimized refining solution for bio‑BDO.

How Membrane Technology Works for BDO Processing

Pressure‑driven cross‑flow filtration uses membranes of different molecular weight cut‑offs:

  • Ultrafiltration (UF): Intercepts proteins, colloids and large‑molecule pigments. Small‑molecule BDO passes through to obtain primary clear permeate.

  • Nanofiltration (NF): Removes residual pigments and partial salts while concentrating BDO solution, greatly lowering the load for subsequent distillation.

Cross‑flow operation mitigates membrane surface blocking. The whole process runs at mild temperature to avoid thermal degradation of target product.

Raw BDO fermentation broth → Pre‑filtration → Ultrafiltration (remove macromolecular impurities) → Nanofiltration (decolor & concentrate) → Clear BDO permeate → Subsequent distillation for high‑purity product. Retentate collects rejected impurities.

Application & Practical Tips

Main scenarios: clarification‑decolorization of fermented BDO broth, pre‑concentration before evaporation, impurity removal and BDO liquid recovery.

Organic fouling from broth components is the main risk. Optimized cross‑flow velocity, operating pressure and regular CIP cleaning can control fouling. Pilot tests with real raw material are suggested to confirm suitable membrane parameters.
