Laboratory liquid-solid separation is a core step for plant extraction, protein recovery, beverage clarification and small batch research. When selecting lab-scale centrifuges, many buyers get confused between basket centrifuge and conventional rotor-type laboratory centrifuge. Although both rely on centrifugal force, their working principle, separation effect and applicable scenarios are totally different.
The experimental basket centrifuge, also called lab basket filter centrifuge, is a filtering centrifuge. It is equipped with a perforated rotating basket and filter cloth. When the machine runs, high-speed rotation generates centrifugal force. Liquid passes through filter cloth and basket holes and becomes filtrate, while solid materials are trapped inside the basket. It can directly separate solid and liquid, and the solid cake inside the basket has low moisture content after spinning. After finishing the test, users can take out solid residues conveniently. This type of machine is ideal when users need to collect solid products from the mixture.
On the other side, the common rotor-type laboratory centrifuge is sedimentation centrifuge. It uses sealed centrifuge tubes mounted on angular or swing rotors. Under centrifugal force, heavier solid particles sink to the bottom of centrifuge tubes, forming sediment. Liquid stays on the upper layer. It only achieves sedimentation instead of complete separation. The precipitated solid still contains high water content. Users have to manually pour out liquid to collect solids. This device is widely used in simple lab sample testing where solid collection is not the priority.
There are clear differences in operation and output. The basket centrifuge can continuously discharge filtrate during operation. It supports test of relatively large volume samples, from several hundred milliliters to liters. It works well for plant extracts, fruit juice, protein suspension and fine slurry separation. Its disadvantage is larger footprint compared with tabletop rotor centrifuge.
Rotor-type tabletop centrifuge is compact, easy to place on lab bench. It is cheap and flexible for small sample volume, usually tens of milliliters per tube. But it cannot filter out liquid automatically. If your target is to harvest solid material and reduce solid moisture, it cannot meet your demand.
For buyers, the selection rule is simple. Choose experimental basket centrifuge if you want to recover solid materials and lower cake moisture for your extraction or beverage trial. If you only need simple qualitative sediment test with tiny samples, rotor lab centrifuge is enough.
Our experimental basket centrifuge supports customizable rotation speed, easy disassembly and full CIP cleaning. It is sanitary and suitable for food, biological and plant extraction laboratory trials.
