# Application of Tubular Membrane System for Industrial Material Clarification

Many industrial production lines face troubles in the pretreatment stage. Feed liquids with high viscosity, abundant colloids, fine suspended solids and protein impurities are easy to block conventional filter cloth, filter bag and spiral membrane elements. Frequent blockage causes short service cycle of filter consumables, unstable filtration effect and frequent shutdown for cleaning. For a long time, plate‑and‑frame filter press and diatomaceous earth filtration are mainstream clarification means. However, these traditional processes bring some inherent drawbacks: filter aid residue, large waste generation, labor‑intensive operation and inconsistent clarity batch‑to‑batch.

Tubular membrane adopts special large‑diameter tube‑type flow channel structure for cross‑flow filtration. Under certain operating pressure, clear permeate liquid passes through the membrane wall, while colloids, fine slag and macromolecular impurities are retained in the circulating retentate side. Material flows at high velocity inside each tube lumen and continuously scours membrane surface. This self‑scouring effect greatly slows down membrane fouling rate, which is the core advantage of tubular membrane compared with other membrane types.

The whole clarification process is purely physical separation without adding diatomite, activated carbon or other filter aids. No chemical additives are introduced into material stream, so original composition of active substances will not be destroyed. It can remove suspended particles, coarse colloids and denatured proteins effectively, improve liquid transparency and reduce solid content of permeate. Good pretreatment effect also protects the subsequent ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and evaporation units, lowering fouling risk for downstream equipment.

Tubular membrane system is usually skid‑mounted with complete components including membrane module, feed pump, circulating pump, pressure sensor, flow meter and PLC control cabinet. Operators can set pressure, flow velocity and circulation time according to different material properties. After batch production, CIP online cleaning procedure is started. Combined acid‑alkali cleaning restores membrane flux, realizing repeated operation for long‑term continuous production.

Typical application scenarios cover multiple industries. In plant extraction production, tubular membrane removes fine plant dregs and colloids from herbal leachate. In bio‑fermentation industry, it clarifies fermentation broth to eliminate mycelium fragments. In fruit‑vegetable processing, it handles raw fruit juice to get rid of coarse suspended matters. For some dairy intermediate liquid with high protein content, tubular membrane also serves as front‑end pretreatment step.

Even though tubular membrane has relatively higher investment cost of membrane elements, it reduces consumption of filter cloth and filter aids year‑by‑year. Waste discharge is decreased and manual workload is cut down. For enterprises with heavy‑pollution feed liquid, comprehensive economic benefit will be reflected in long‑term running.

As the requirement for product quality and environmental protection keeps rising, more manufacturers choose tubular membrane as preferred pretreatment solution. It provides reliable clarification pretreatment for the whole membrane process chain and plays an irreplaceable role in modern green separation industry.
