Application of Membrane Filtration Technology in Green Tea Extraction

Green tea extract is rich in tea polyphenols, free amino acids, caffeine and other valuable functional components, which are widely used in tea beverages, instant tea powder, health products and food additives. Conventional green tea leachate always contains fine tea residues, macromolecular pectin, protein colloids and suspended particles. These contaminants cause turbidity, sediment formation and poor storage stability of extracts. Traditional clarification approaches like high-temperature heating or repeated centrifugation will destroy heat-sensitive flavor substances and active nutrients. As a low-temperature physical separation method, membrane filtration technology offers an efficient clarification solution for green tea processing.

We carried out laboratory purification tests on green tea leachate using membrane separation equipment. The three sample bottles in the image show the liquid status at different treatment stages:

  1. Green tea raw extract (Left)

This is the liquid directly obtained after green tea leaching. It presents dark brown color. Large amounts of tiny tea particles, colloids and macromolecular impurities are suspended inside. The liquid is opaque and prone to generate precipitates after long-term standing, which cannot be directly used for deep processing.

  2. Primary permeate after preliminary membrane treatment (Middle)

After primary membrane filtration, part of large suspended solids and coarse colloids are intercepted. The turbidity of green tea liquid decreases obviously. The color turns lighter than the raw extract, yet a small quantity of tiny colloidal impurities still remain, so the solution is not fully transparent. It is an intermediate liquid in the staged purification process.

  3. Polished final filtrate after precision membrane filtration (Right)

After secondary fine membrane filtration, nearly all suspended particles, macromolecular pectin and unstable colloids are removed. The liquid becomes clear and transparent. The clarified green tea filtrate effectively avoids later turbidity and precipitation during storage. Meanwhile, the whole filtration process runs at ambient or low temperature, retaining most natural active ingredients and original flavor of green tea.

Membrane filtration adopts physical separation without adding flocculants or filter aids. Compared with traditional processes, it maintains low operating temperature to protect heat-sensitive tea polyphenols and aroma components. The graded membrane purification process can be customized according to production demands, realizing continuous clarification of green tea extract.

This technology fits the production of concentrated green tea juice, instant green tea powder, liquid tea beverage raw materials and tea essence. It optimizes liquid appearance, improves product stability, simplifies production procedures and lowers comprehensive production costs.

In conclusion, membrane separation filtration is a reliable clarification technology for green tea extraction. Our laboratory test results verify its excellent impurity removal effect. It helps tea processing manufacturers acquire high-quality stable green tea extracts and enhance product market competitiveness.

Membrane separation technology is a kind of technology that uses a selectively permeable membrane as the separation medium. By applying a certain driving force (such as pressure difference, concentration difference, etc.) on both sides of the membrane, the components on the feed side can selectively permeate through the membrane, so as to achieve the purposes of separation, purification, concentration and so on.
Nowadays, more and more enterprises have keenly perceived the remarkable advantages brought by membrane technology and are actively adopting this technology to boost their own development.

In the food and beverage industry, enterprises utilize membrane technology for operations such as juice concentration and protein purification. This not only effectively preserves the flavor and nutritional components of products but also enhances product quality and extends the shelf life.

In the chemical industry, membrane technology can be applied to the recovery and separation of solvents. It improves the utilization rate of raw materials, reduces production costs, and at the same time, decreases pollutant emissions, enabling green production.

In the water treatment industry, membrane technology plays an irreplaceable role. From the in-depth treatment of industrial wastewater to the purification of drinking water, by removing impurities, heavy metal ions, and microorganisms in water, it provides enterprises with high-quality production water and effluent that meets the standards.

In the biopharmaceutical industry, membrane separation technology can accurately separate and purify biological products, ensuring the activity and purity of products and facilitating the smooth progress of new drug research and development as well as production.

It can be said that membrane technology is gradually becoming an important means for enterprises to enhance their competitiveness and achieve sustainable development.
